Each type involves long-term, inflexible patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving that cause distress or difficulties in relationships and daily life.
Odd or Eccentric Disorders
These involve distorted thinking and unusual behaviors, often leading to social difficulties.
- Paranoid Personality Disorder – distrust and suspicion of others without sufficient basis.
- Schizoid Personality Disorder – detachment from social relationships, limited emotional expression.
- Schizotypal Personality Disorder – odd beliefs, eccentric behavior, social anxiety, and distorted thinking.
Dramatic, Emotional, or Erratic Disorders
These are marked by impulsive, unstable, and intense emotions or behaviors.
- Antisocial Personality Disorder – disregard for the rights of others, deceit, lack of remorse.
- Borderline Personality Disorder – instability in relationships, self-image, and emotions; fear of abandonment.
- Histrionic Personality Disorder – excessive emotionality, attention-seeking, dramatic behavior.
- Narcissistic Personality Disorder – grandiosity, need for admiration, lack of empathy.
Anxious or Fearful Disorders
These involve patterns of extreme anxiety and fearfulness in behavior and relationships.
- Avoidant Personality Disorder – feelings of inadequacy, hypersensitivity to criticism, social avoidance.
- Dependent Personality Disorder – excessive need to be cared for, clinginess, difficulty making decisions independently.
- Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD) – preoccupation with order, control, rules, and perfectionism (different from OCD, which involves intrusive thoughts and compulsive rituals).
What Is A Personality Disorder?
Personality disorders are a large group of mental illnesses that tend to develop early in life and shape the way a person thinks and behaves in unhealthy ways. A personality disorder can make it hard to react appropriately to people and situations. As a result, dealing with everyday stresses and problems in daily life can be very difficult. There is a wide variety of personality disorders with different sorts of symptoms, such as narcissistic personality disorder, borderline personality disorder, obsessive-compulsive personality disorder, and paranoid personality disorder. Mood disorders are described as emotional states that are inconsistent with a person’s circumstances. Some examples of common mood disorders include major depression, bipolar disorder, seasonal affective disorder, and depression induced by substance use or medication. Typical symptoms of a mood disorder can include sadness, irritability, fatigue, difficulty in concentrating, and changes in appetite. Understanding and distinguishing the differences between personality disorders and mood disorders can take a lot of training and education, and there are a multitude of different options for treating both.
